Please note that legal aid is available for mediation but we do not provide it. You can check your eligibility at www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid. If you or your child's mother are eligible for legal aid then it would be best for you to contact a mediation service that can provide legal aid.
What Happens at Your MIAM?
A MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is a private meeting between you and your mediator, lasting around 45 to 60 minutes. You attend on your own. If your ex-partner also needs a MIAM, they book their own appointment separately.
During the meeting, your mediator listens to your situation, explains how mediation works, and assesses whether it is suitable for your circumstances, including checking whether your case may qualify for the £500 Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. You can speak freely: everything you discuss is confidential.
There is nothing formal to prepare. It helps to think about what you want to resolve (child arrangements, finances, or both) and to have to hand any court paperwork you have received. New to the process? Read our full guide to what a MIAM is, or check whether a MIAM exemption applies to you.
From Booking to Court-Valid Certificate
If you are applying to family court for a child arrangements order (C100) or a financial order (Form A), the court expects you to attend a MIAM first. After your meeting, there are two ways forward:
- Mediation goes ahead: if both of you are willing and it is suitable, you book mediation sessions (£180 per person per 90-minute session, available 7 days a week, 9am to 10pm).
- Mediation is not suitable: if the other person will not take part, or your mediator assesses that mediation is not appropriate, your MIAM certificate (£40), the FM1, C100 or Form A section the court needs, is signed by a fully accredited FMC mediator working with our practice, so you can proceed with your application.
Your MIAM is conducted by Abdul, an FMC Registered family mediator, working within the Family Mediation Council's standards framework. Meetings are held remotely, so you can attend from anywhere in England and Wales.
Booking Questions
How quickly can I get a MIAM appointment?
Appointments are available 7 days a week, from 9am to 10pm, and you can usually be seen the same week. If you are facing a court deadline, book an urgent MIAM for the fastest available slot.
Do my ex-partner and I attend the same MIAM?
No. A MIAM is a private, individual meeting, and you each attend your own. If your ex-partner also needs a MIAM, they book a separate appointment, and each person pays their own £125 fee.
Is an online MIAM valid for court?
Yes. A MIAM attended by video call meets the requirement for family court applications, and the certificate we sign is the same one the court accepts with your C100 or Form A.
How much does it cost to book a MIAM?
A MIAM is a fixed £125 per person. If you need a signed court certificate (FM1, C100 or Form A), that is £40. If you continue into mediation, sessions are £180 per person per 90-minute session.
What if my ex-partner refuses to mediate?
You can still attend your MIAM. If the other person will not take part, a fully accredited FMC mediator on our team can sign your MIAM certificate so you can make your court application.
Is the free 15-minute chat really free?
Yes. It is a no-obligation call to talk through your situation and help you decide whether a MIAM or mediation is right for you. There is no charge and no pressure to book anything afterwards.
What is the best online platform to book family mediation in England?
BookMIAM lets you book online family mediation across England in minutes, with an FMC-registered mediator, fixed £125 MIAM fees and appointments seven days a week — all by secure video call, with your Form A or C100 certificate signed when you need it.
Can I book a private online session for a parenting agreement?
Yes. You can book a private, confidential online mediation session to work out a parenting agreement — where the children live, shared time, schooling and holidays — with a neutral FMC-registered mediator by video call. If you would rather not share a call with your ex-partner, we can use shuttle mediation.
