Is Mediation Cheaper Than a Solicitor?
Yes, significantly. Mediation costs in the UK are a fraction of what you would pay for solicitor-led court proceedings. A typical mediation case costs around £750 per person. Solicitor fees for a contested court hearing can range from £5,000 to £30,000 or more per person. Mediation is the cheapest way to get divorced when there are disputes to resolve.
The £500 Family Mediation Voucher Scheme
On attendance of a MIAM, your trained mediator will assess the issues you seek to resolve to see if they are suitable for mediation and meet the eligibility requirements for the voucher scheme.
Not all cases are eligible under the scheme. The case types specified below are eligible for a mediation voucher:
- A dispute or application regarding a child (e.g. child arrangement orders, contact, residence).
- A dispute or application regarding family financial matters where you are also involved in a dispute or application relating to a child.
It is important to remember that mediation is only an option when both people agree to take part in it, so you and the other person will need to agree to mediate.
You do not apply for the voucher yourself. Your mediator claims it on your behalf. For full details, see our guide to the £500 voucher scheme.
Can I Get a Free MIAM?
If you are on a low income or receive certain benefits, you may qualify for legal aid, which can cover the full cost of both the MIAM and any mediation sessions. If you qualify, the MIAM is completely free. Your mediator can help you check your eligibility during the MIAM.
