What Is a MIAM Certificate?
A “MIAM certificate” usually means the mediator’s confirmation that you have attended a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, recorded on the relevant court paperwork. You will usually need to attend a MIAM before certain family court applications in England and Wales, unless a valid exemption applies.

How to Get Your MIAM Certificate

How Long Is a MIAM Certificate Valid For?
A MIAM certificate is valid for four months from the date of the meeting. If you do not submit your court application within four months, you will need to attend another MIAM.
What If Mediation Is Not Suitable?
If your mediator assesses that mediation is not suitable for your situation, or if the other party refuses to attend, Abdul’s practice supervisor will sign the relevant court form where required and appropriate. The certificate confirms that you attended the MIAM and that mediation was considered but was not appropriate. You can then proceed directly to court.
Do Both Parties Need a MIAM Certificate?
Only the person making the court application (the applicant) is required to attend a MIAM. However, if both parties agree to try mediation, the other party (respondent) will also need to attend their own separate MIAM.
If the other party refuses to attend, your mediator will note this on your certificate and you can proceed with your application.
When You Do Not Need a MIAM Certificate
