Family Mediation in Surrey
Family mediation in Surrey is a fixed-fee, out-of-court process where a trained, FMC-registered mediator helps separating and divorcing couples and parents agree arrangements for their children and finances — an agreement a solicitor can then make legally binding — without going to court. BookMIAM provides this online across Surrey, by secure video call, on fixed fees (MIAM £125 per person).
Surrey is commuter country, and many couples we work with are juggling long hours in London with everything else separation throws at them. Online mediation is built for exactly that: no office to find, no afternoon off work, and no awkward shared waiting room. It is voluntary, confidential, and almost always faster and cheaper than court, and you stay in control of the outcome.
Your Family Mediator
Your mediator is Abdul Wahid, an FMA trained and Family Mediation Council registered family mediator with over 10 years of experience. FMC registration matters, and court forms that allow you to make a family court application in England and Wales are signed by a fully accredited FMC mediator working with our practice.
What Mediation Can Sort Out
- Child arrangements: where the children live, how time is shared, holidays, schooling and handovers.
- Finances on divorce: the family home, savings, pensions, debts and maintenance.
- Property and assets for unmarried couples who are separating.
- Revisiting an arrangement that was agreed before but has stopped working.
What Family Mediation Costs in Surrey
Fees are the same wherever you are in Surrey, because every session is held online:
- MIAM: £125 per person, the first meeting, held individually.
- Mediation session: £180 per person for a 90-minute joint session.
- Court certificate: £40, if you need one to apply to court.
Where children are involved you may also qualify for £500 towards mediation through the government scheme, see our £500 family mediation voucher guide.
If You Do End Up in Court
Most families never need to. But if agreement is not possible and you have to apply to court, a Surrey case would usually be dealt with at your local family court, for example the family court at Guildford. Before the court will accept most C100 (children) or Form A (finance) applications, you must first attend a MIAM, which is where mediation begins anyway.
How Online Mediation Works
- Attend a MIAM: you and your ex-partner each have a separate first meeting by video call.
- Agree to mediate: if you both want to go ahead, we book your first joint session.
- Work through the issues: most families need between one and four sessions.
- Write up what you agreed: you get a clear summary that solicitors can turn into a legally binding order.
If you would rather not share a video call with your ex-partner, we can run the session as shuttle mediation, with the mediator moving between two separate calls.
